Inselspital, Bern University Hospital
CTU Bern is closely linked to Inselspital Bern. The Inselspital is the largest hospital of the city and canton of Bern (ca. 130'000 and 1'000'000 inhabitants, respectively). It is the only Swiss university hospital concentrating all medical specialties on one campus.
The Inselspital is an important medical center for central Switzerland (Mittelland) and serves as a medical care center for the cantons of Bern, Jura, Neuenburg, Solothurn, Wallis and partially Luzern and Freiburg.
Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine (ISPM)
CTU Bern is hosted by the Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine at the University of Bern. The institute employs some 120 staff, including a team of epidemiologists, statisticians, data managers, database programmers and data entry personnel. The Institute is active both in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching (e.g. Swiss MPH Programme, European Master in Epidemiology, IEA Residential Summer Course in Epidemiology). Current research themes include methodological issues in clinical epidemiology and health services research, HIV, musculoskeleta healthy childhood asthma & cancer, sexual & reproductive health, and determinants of health.
The ISPM has substantial expertise in the design, conduct, management and analysis of randomized trials, prospective cohort studies and collaborative databases, surveys and other observational studies. It has performed major methodological studies on the quality of randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses, has contributed to the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) statement (www.consort-statement.org) and is the lead center for the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) statement (www.strobe-statement.org).
